In concentration/labour camps or "Gulap", created by Stalin, millions of the Gulap's inmates perished due to hard labour, hunger, cold and sicknesses.

Also in 1990s, Yekaterinburg was the centre of Russia's worst mafia warfare between two gangs battling for control of Russia's precious stone mining and metal industries.

The cemetery of the mafias and a memorial dedicated to victims of Gulag are located side by side.

One interesting observation was that most of the vehicles on the road in the city were covered with mud. "Why wash when it will get dirty again the next day?" the Guide told us when asked!
